ROAD CONSTRUCTION

Incorporating resources and technology developed by our partner companies, alfa8 brings patented nanotechnology and methodology to its Road Construction projects

AFRICA is embarking on a road-building spree. Ahead of the pack are mining organizations, largely funded by China, which have flooded into the continent over the last decade and need ways to transport materials. But also afoot is a larger, pan-African effort to upgrade and expand the continent’s highway network, as well as building many smaller connecting roads.

The need for infrastructural change is undeniable. Compared with the world average, Africa’s existing road network is sparse and poorly maintained. According to a report for the World Bank, average road density on the continent is 204 kilometers of road per 1000 square kilometers of land area – only a quarter of which is paved. In contrast, the world average is 944 kilometers per 1000 square kilometers with more than half paved. This is partly due to Africa’s vast area, but its roads look sparse even when viewed by population

The plan is to expand the existing, 10,000 kilometer-long network of major roads to between 60,000 and 100,000 km – either by upgrading existing poor roads or building new ones. The result would be nine arteries, some hugging Africa’s entire coastline, while others strategically criss-cross the continent. Some 250,000 km of smaller roads will be built or upgraded to connect smaller cities to the main arteries, plus another 70,000 km to plug in rural areas.

SMART AGRICULTURE

The agricultural sector is going to face enormous challenges in order to feed the 9.6 billion people that the FAO predicts are going to inhabit the planet by 2050: food production must increase by 70% by 2050, and this has to be achieved in spite of the limited availability of arable lands, the increasing need for fresh water (agriculture consumes 70 per cent of the world’s fresh water supply) and other less predictable factors, such as the impact of climate change, which, according a recent report by the UN could lead, among other things, to changes to seasonal events in the life cycle of plant and animals. One way to address these issues and increase the quality and quantity of agricultural production is using sensing technology to make farms more intelligent and more connected through precision agriculture and smart farming solutions. We help our clients observe, measure and respond to inter and intra-field variability in crops and deliver a decision support system for whole farm management with the goal of optimizing returns on inputs while preserving resources. A core strategy for alfa8 Smart AG is the phytogeomorphological approach, which applies multi-year crop growth stability/characteristics to topological terrain attributes, especially as we assess geomorphology components that dictate the hydrology of the land. Along with our CICL, Hitachi, and Panasonic resources, alfa8’s NextGen GPS and GNSS solutions, deliver precision location positioning, which allows for mapping of the spatial variability of broad spectrum of assets and data points, including crop yield, terrain features/topography, organic matter content, moisture levels, nitrogen levels, pH, EC, Mg, K, and others.  Our suite of arrays mounted on GPS-equipped harvesters consist of real-time sensors that measure everything from chlorophyll levels to plant water status, along with multispectral imagery, in conjunction with satellite imagery by variable rate technology such as seeders, and sprayers, we are able to help you optimally distribute resources. alfa8 solutions include utilization of unmanned aerial vehicles that are cost-effective and readily operated with minimal training. Our drones are equipped with hyperspectral or RGB cameras to capture multi-arrayed images of agricultural fields and processed through photogrammetric methods to create orthophotos and NDVI maps.  All data points can be collected and analyzed through edge and mobile data centers and incorporate AI and self-learning platforms for ever-increasing efficiency and optimal performance.
